A new year and new designs
TweetOK maybe I started the year a little cranky, I love the Oris categorise they are broad enough that I fit into each one nicely. I guess that’s what it is all about, the development teams and the marketing guys at Oris working on concepts and ideas that will capture the greatest amount of people’s attention. I know this doesn’t always work with some of the design, RUF CTR3 Chronograph for example just don’t seem to connect with the consumer. Although it could be worse you could be the guy who came up with the great idea of “New Coke” genius, I wonder where he is working now?
I understand it is not easy trying to accommodate different tastes across a massive audience. Oris are designing watches for their markets in Switzerland all the way to Brazil, Australia and up to Finland and every other country in between. Different cultures and values that this market covers is frightening to think about. When you think about it like that, you are going to produce a watch design or two that people do not like. It’s always a concern in the back of the designers mind as a new model is launched, ‘how well with it be accepts?’
We have started a little design competition here to design a watch for the Friends of Oris Forum, of which I am sure there will be a mountain of different designs and concepts. It’s also this time of the year that the major watch fair BaselWorld is on. When all the great watch houses come together to display their new releases. It must be like the night before Christmas, that expectation and anticipation, hoping that you clients will like your new designs. Not much you can do at that point once they are released apart from stand behind your designs and embrace the positives as well as the negatives.
I am hoping that there are some really great designs this year round for their base Oris range along with some exciting limited edition releases. Although the limited edition concepts can be over done with too many being released at once devaluing the entire concept, please don’t let there be another RUF this year.
