A Nice Clean Dial.

I recall a couple of months ago while Warren and I were recording a video review I said that this particular watch add a ‘beautiful clean dial.’  Rob cut in and said you never hear of a dirty dial or a congested dial do you?  He had a good point you would never find any watch company trying to sell their watch as a congested design that has a complicated and chaotic dial.

The dial can make or break a watch a small colour change or font of a number on the dial can put people of this fantastic watch.  It is such a critical thing area of the watch as we spend the majority of the time looking at the dial when we check the time.  Yet for such a small area there is a lot of design there and a lot of things that can go wrong.  Take for instant the Bob Dylan there was a lot of talk on the forum about how his signature on the dial took away for the overall design of the watch.  Yes I know there will be comments about the watch also being square but that majority of the discussion was about the signature.

But this year the Oscar Peterson was released and again his signature was on the dial but it didn’t cause as much discussion as the Dylan did.  This week Warren and I reviewed the new Williams F1 Team Day Date with the blue ring.  Part of the additions to this watch is the Williams F1 Team logo on the dial.  Now there hasn’t been as much discussion on this addition which I think is a great addition.

Why have a range of watches which are closely aligned to a major sponsor without any markings on them.  I thought at the very least the Williams logo would be on the back case of the watch if not on the front.  There is a delicate balance between having too much text and logo to not having anything.  Personally I think it adds to the watch and definitely adds to the Formula One feel of the watch.  This is actually the only watch in the motor sport range that has the Williams logo.

Who would have thought that just that little logo could change the feel of the watch.  Surprisingly whenever I have had clients looking at this model and the red ring without the Williams logo they have gone for the red ring.  So here lies the problem for Oris how do you get that balance right to accommodate clients like me who want the logo and other clients who are after that clean dial?  I hope Oris continue to keep that Williams logo on their watches are that I believe adds to the dial in a clean way.
