Better in the Flesh

Ever been disappointed with your hero?  I’m sure most people have faced this situation when finally meet a famous sportsman, athlete, rock star who you have only ever seen on the television and then been disappointed?  Perhaps they were impolite, maybe they were acting inappropriately around your friends, or they just appeared smaller than that giant of a person you are used to seeing on the TV.
Ever travelled to a destination which does not quite fit the brochures that you read in the travel agents?  Those beaches of white sand, blue water and coconut palms are actually not as blue, white or green as you had hoped and the resort actually looks out over the street and not the beach.
I remember seeing a famous model here in Australia out a restaurant and was massively disappointed when the person sitting there didn’t have that same beauty that i had seen in the magazines.  That sparkle wasn’t there, that glint in the eye and all I could think was there must have been a lot of Photoshop going on there.
But does that ring true all the time, are the images we see in magazines or on the tube better than in the flesh.  Am I living in a world where everything is more beautiful after it has been touched up by a computer?  Please don’t let it be so; I want to think that there things in life that are better in the flesh, I want that white sand beach, I want my sports star to be pleased that I want their autograph or is this false world the best it is going to be for me?
Balance in the universe was restored this week for me and it all came by the way of an ugly watch.  Ugly is a tough word but the Oris Titan Rectangular is not the most impressive looking watch on paper.  It looked complicated for a simple day date watch.  The dial appeared to be busy and difficult to identify where to read the date.  The truth is I wasn’t looking forward to seeing this watch.  But how things can change, this watch is quite impressive in the flesh.
Had I gotten this all wrong is the world more beautiful than on the pages of a magazine?  Are Oris able to produce watches that are better in the flesh than on the pages of their catalogue?  All those other watches in the past that I have looked at and thought were terrible could actually be magnificent.  Perhaps I need to go back and review all those watches that I have passed over previously as they may be better in the flesh.
