Dress watch or Sports watch?

When it comes to watches there are I believe two general categories the dress watch and the sports watch.  In the Oris range I believe this is pretty simple to divide up.  Dress watches are all those in the Culture range and those in the Aviation range, except for the BC3 and BC4 watches.  Those two sub-categories of watches fall into sports watch range along with all of the Divers and Motor Sport watches.

Now determining which category these watches fall into is easy, determining which watch to purchase is a little more difficult.

Do I want to have a watch that has a sporty feel to it because I like to go mountain bike riding and fishing?  However that is only on the weekends, what about during the week when I am in the office and need to look professional?  This is where the dress watch stands on its own, and for five days of the week it does have the weight of numbers over the weekend warrior of the sports watch with only two days.  Also how much sport do I play, am I kidding myself, I haven’t ridden a bike since I was twelve, and I buy my fish from the guy at the supermarket.  The most activity I do is the occasional round of golf and a couple of beers at the bar afterwards, that’s not really sporty, is it?

Now I need to consider of cause the cross over between the office and the weekend, can a dress watch really cross over from a week day watch to a weekend warrior?  For that matter how well does a sporty watch transfer into the business world without looking chunky, robust and over the top?  Could a Big Crown Pointer Date still look good on the golf course?  I don’t see why I need a Williams F1 Team Chronograph when I am selecting a 7 iron from my golf bag.  Then again I could use that chronograph function to good use in timing those boring meetings about sale projections and dealing with difficult customers.

This doesn’t really help me decide on which way to go so I have decided to make a list of the three best sporty watches that cross over into the business world and those dress watches that look good on the putting green and at the 19th hole.

Sports Watches for the Board Room

  • Williams F1 Team Chronograph (Black Dial)
  • TT3 Chronograph (Black)
  • BC3 42mm

Dress Watches that are Great on the Golf Course

  • Big Crown Small Second Pointer Day
  • Artelier Chronograph (White Dial)
  • Classic Date (Two Tone)

Now where are my golf clubs.....

I am just starting to read some of these blog posts, and you bring up some great points! As a young professional living in an expensive city (Washington, DC) and not making all the money in the world, this is a pretty constant question when it comes to purchasing new watches. If I am going to spend some decent coin on a new watch, I want to be sure it strikes a nice balance so I can wear it in as many situations as possible. I am currently in the market for my first Oris, and have been having this exact same debate with myself. I work in an architecture firm, so I need to look professional, but I am afforded a little wiggle room for style since we architects are expected to be at least a little fashionable (supposedly, anyway!). But, I also like to throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt after work and on the weekends, so I would like something that could also work casually. That is why, for now, I have landed on the new BC4 (SKU 645 7617 4174). The black leather strap with relatively clean, dark, subdued face means it can be taken seriously as a "dress up" watch, but the band stitching and larger size also allow it to be worn with more casual outfits. Now all I have to do is wait until they release the watch early next year! In the meantime, I'll be tucking money away.
