Pimp my Oris
TweetI think that title alone should get people’s attention. You all know what I am talking about with cars, we have all been sitting there at the lights and somebody turns up with their pimped out ride. They have put on a new set of mag rims to fit their low profile tyres. Unfortunately they don’t upgrade the brake system of the car so with these enormous rims they still have these baby brakes. A fully sick stereo system that can be heard from seven blocks away, playing the latest R&B from an artist that will never be heard of after their one hit. A lot of guys pay a lot of money to pimp up their crappy cars.
Then there is the other side of the pimping of the car, the hotting up. OK I know hotting or hotted is not really a word but these are the guys who have hotted up there motors. While the boys who pimp their rides are worried about looks the guys who hotted up their rides are more worried about performance than looks. They add turbos to the motor with extreme release values that are the only things that can be heard over the sound of that crappy R&B from that stereo. Brembo brakes are added with ceramic discs and improved suspension that are all hidden behind a spoiler that touches ever speed bump it goes over. But that dragging of the spoiler is fine as the oversized exhaust system makes the same dragging sound on the other side of the speed bump.
I don’t know maybe it’s me knowing that I have a car straight off the production line that has a bigger motor, wider tyres, better breaks, and a crappier stereo than those who have hotted up their rides. I also know that I will still be able to beat them to the first corner and be gone. I’m proud of my crappy stereo cause I know that I can hear Tom Waits, Henry Rollins or The Saints and no one else has to listen to it. But that is all part of what I like about my standard car, it is better than the majority of hotted up cars out there. That said there is something nice about certain hotted up cars, or pimped out rides, they can look good and perform better than the original thing.
Can you pimp out a watch or hot up a movement? I know Jeff regularly pimps up his watches with a new leather strap; in fact some of the patterns on those straps have come straight from the Pimp’s handbook of fashion. Although they may not make the same amount of noise as a fully sick stereo the visual impact of the straps is very impressive. I know that Warren has added a chrome bezel to his Williams Lefty Chrono that isn’t standard. All of a sudden this watch is looking slick, almost like he has lowered the suspension and added chrome rims to impress the watch fraternity. Guys on the forum are discussing changing their standard diver’s bezel with the new ceramic version. So I know of watches that have been pimped out, what about hotted up inside? I find it hard to believe that one of our master watch makers on the forum hasn’t had a play around with the movements. I’m sure they have popped the case and added a couple of sharper cogs, perhaps a better grade of spring or two, and finished off with some of those fully sick blue head screws.
You know what I am talking about, have you done this to your watch or at least thought about it?
