Summer and Winter Watches???
TweetThe seasons are changing here in Brisbane. We don’t really have four seasons, only two, summer and winter. I know that most people will question the we even have a winter as our minimum only gets down to about 8 degrees Celsius. But for us Queenslanders it is winter and we will embrace that we can wear shorts on the coldest day of the year. That said summer is on its way as anybody who has lived in Brisbane for more than a year will know that when the Jacaranda trees flower, summer is almost here. These trees almost overnight change from leafs to entirely covered in purple flowers. The city is a sea of purple trees and every student in the city has that sinking feeling that exams are only a week or two away and all those days spent skipping lectures are going to come back to haunt you soon.
It also means that things are a little sweatier, and the thought of a leather strap on a watch is not a good idea. Summer is definitely the time for a metal bracelet but does that also mean an entirely different watch, should I have a winter watch and a summer watch?
Winter watches for me are;
- Big Crown Small Second Pointer Day (Black Dial)
- TT3 Chronograph (Gold & Black)
- Diver Titan C Small Second Date (47mm)
These watches for me are all warm watches that like winter are a little subtle and quiet. Watches that don’t show off are there for the time and presented in an elegant way like a warming scarf or a great jacket that is faithful and will be there year after year. These watches are happy to be hidden, they know how stylish they are, and are happy within that self confidence. Sure you can wear these watches in summer but I don’t believe they are the ultimate summer watches.
Summer watches show off, they like to be seen, they are flashy and cry out ‘look at me!’ Watches like;
- Diver Small Second Date (Orange & Black Dial)
- BC3 Advanced Day Date (All Black)
- Artelier Skeleton
I can hear what you are saying, ‘Smithy I get the first two they are loud watches but the Artelier Skeleton?’ I understand when you first read this that the Artelier Skeleton may not be an obvious choice but when you think about summer this watch is perfect. On a metal bracelet it is bright and sunny and with the skeleton movement it has been stripped back to its bare essentials. It’s light, airy and fun just like a day at the beach, nothing on but a pair of board shorts and pluggers, the bare essentials. Now I wouldn’t suggest you wear your Artelier Skeleton to the beach but it does have that energy of summer that the Big Crown doesn’t. These watches don’t want to be hidden behind a jacket or under a shirt cuff. These watches need to be on display they need to be told how cool they are, they thrive on the acknowledgment of others.
What are your winter and summer watches?
