Latest 2008 changes at ORIS.CH

Reply from cooldude, 28.08.2008, 10:20:

Actually not everything. I saw the changes yesterday but they still don't have the new artelier complication in gold. Matter of fact they have no artelier complications at all. As usual the Swiss web sites have plenty of room for improvement. The day the website changes when Oris does
the new watch product release in April will be the day I kick the bucket. It will just amaze me. IWC for examples understands the internet and leverages these kinds of things to their advantage. Some day Oris will get this piece of the puzzle in their business model right. They already have great watches with good quality and a wide variety of choices. They just now need to understand and leverage the their website.

new oris divers date has two types of crown?

Post by jsdelos, 28.08.2008, 06:32:

i bought an oris divers date last week. when i looked it up in the net, the one i bought is different in that it has a crown similar to that of the titan while the divers date on internet has glossy steel crown. i looked at other retailers and the same thing, they have glossy crown. i asked the retailer from whom i bought my watch who in turn asked the official distributor. and they said that oris released two versions, one with matt finish crown and another with glossy crown. i don't know how true this is but i just don't feel right as i haven't seen any divers date with the type of crown as mine. can anybody help me out on this. i do feel like i was given a watch with mistake.

EXCLUSIVE NEWS ORIS CHRONORIS in GREEN!!!

Reply from andrew, 28.08.2008, 00:57:

» British racing green perhaps?
»
» Unless they significantly increase the WR, then sadly it won't be on my
» Christmas list..

IIRC Oris increased the WR of its new F1 watches to 10 atm (100m) with the quick-lock crown, so I see no reason why this wouldn't have been done for the new Chronoris - assuming it has a quicklock crown.

New Green Chronoris image (see it here first)

Reply from andrew, 28.08.2008, 00:54:

The green is much more subtle, but the rest of the dial isn't! So much going on. The 10 min countdown is more useful in yachting than motorsport, although the 24-hour hand is useful. The hour-counter dial is a welcome addition though, to me the 2005 Chronoris seemed slightly underdone without it.

Would be interesting to see a 2005 Chronoris with the green livery. Though I hope Oris doesn't start using the Chronoris name to market a range of increasingly complex and financially unobtainable chronographs.

Important Notes on Water Resistance.

Reply from AEsco48, 26.08.2008, 20:27:

Hows it going...

When i purchased my watch about a year ago i read some where about this whole thing where a 50m watch can not even be taken swimming in a pool... the whole thing about static pressure and pressure of the watch moving under water.... Well I'm a Mechanical Engineer and i took out my Transport Phenomena book and did some quick calculations... don't remember the specifics (was over a year ago) but at 50meter... and the watch moving at a speed of something like 10m\sec... (22.2 mph) (at the same depth), the pressure difference is almost negible.... so if you were swimming just under the surface of the water... even if you were going 50mph you would not even get close to the pressure at 50M

Just an FYI...

BTW I have an Oris Williams Day Date, that i don't shower with or take swimming...

» Water resistance can be a confusing thing in wrist watches. From brand to
» brand and even from inside the same brand you will get conflicting advice
» on what you can do with a watch at the same WR rating.
» For instance if you read the little instruction book that comes with your
» Oris watch you could be led to believe that you could actually take a
» watch with a 30 m rating all the way down to a depth of 30 meters. This is
» not the case.
» Not by a long shot.
» The Oris General Catalogue ( given only to retailers ) states that
» activities for the different levels of water resistance are as follows.
»
» 30 m Wash hands only.
» 50 m Wash hands only.
» 100m Wash hands , shower , bath , swim on surface only.
» 300m includes all of above plus diving , this of course includes watches
» with 1000 and 2000 meter ratings.
» This means do not swim in any watch resembling a dress watch or motor
» racing sport watch.
» Some Q and A that may be of help.
»
» Q. My watch is labeled water resistant to 50 meters but the manufacturer
» says that I can not wear it swimming . Why is that ?
» A. The different levels of water resistance as expressed in meters are
» only theoretical. They refer to the depth at which a watch will keep water
» out if both watch and the water are perfectly motionless. In real life ,
» the movement of the wearers arm through the water increases the pressure
» on the watch dramatically; so it can't be worn to the depths indicated by
» lab testing machines.
»
» Q. Is water resistance permanent ?
» A. No. Water resistance depends on several factors, some of which can be
» affected by wear or simply by time. Gaskets can become corroded or
» misshapen , watch crystals can become loose or cracked so get your WR
» tested at least once a year.
»
» Q. How is water resistance tested ?
» A. There are basically two ways of testing for water resistance ,
» referred to as " Dry" and " Wet" testing. In the former , the watch is
» subjected to air pressure and measurements are taken to see weather the
» case expands as a result of air leaking into the case. If it does then the
» watch is not water resistant. In one type of wet testing the watch is first
» subjected to air pressure then submerged in water. if air bubbles are seen
» escaping from the case then it is not water resistant.
»
» Q. Can I wear my watch in the hot tub ?
» A. No . Exposing your watch to heat , weather it's in a hot tub or sauner
» can cause the gaskets to loose their shape and their ability to keep water
» out.
»
» Q. Besides extreme heat what else can jeopardize my watches ability to
» keep water out?
» A. Some chemicals can corrode the gasket. Heavily chlorinated water can
» cause problems , as can hair spray and spray on perfumes , they can work
» their way into the watches seams and damage the gaskets.
»
» I hope this information helps you keep your new friend in perfect running
» order.
» Remember always err on the side of caution and if you want a watch to go
» swimming in , buy a dive watch.
»
» Cheers
» Warren

Strange noises...

Reply from pjmcburney, 26.08.2008, 17:02:

» What you are describing sounds quite normal for the movement in your watch.
» The 7750 movement is renowned for making these kind of sounds as the rotor
» free wheels in one direction.

Whew... I think.

Funny thing is, I had never noticed it before, maybe I just hadn't taken enough notice.
Or, does this movement 'wear' in over a period of time and make a bit more noise as it does so?

It gains/loses no majorly discernible time so I can only conclude that all is well in there... just noisy.

I've had motorbikes (Triumph T595 triple) that sounded like someone had thrown a hand-full of marbles into the intake when they were running, but were perfectly ok - just what they sounded like.

I'll put it down to the vagaries of mechanical watch ownership - much more 'alive' than any quartz pretender!

Cheers
Oris Artelier Alarm

New Green Chronoris image (see it here first)

Reply from Warren, 26.08.2008, 15:48:

»
» I like the fact Oris are standing out from the crowd in their use of
» green, but the dial is just too busy for me. Nice looking gloves though!

This has been said before and a case in point is the new Williams chrono. In photos it looks a little busy , but when you see it in the flesh and on someones wrist it is a stunner.
Photos are always a poor representation of the real and in the case of the Chronoris here it's even worse as this is little more than an artists representation of the watch at best.
